How to text your crush for the first time

The first text is the highest-stakes-feeling, lowest-actual-stakes message you'll send all week. The trick is to give them something specific to react to — not just 'hey'.

Almost every crush you've ever had has not been ruined by a slightly clunky first text. They have been ruined by no text at all. Send something — short is fine, specific is better.

A good first text does one of three things: references something only the two of you would get, asks a question they'll genuinely want to answer, or sets up a small plan. Anything else (especially 'hey' or 'wyd') just hands them homework.

Common questions

Should I double-text if they don't reply?

Wait a day or two. If you have a real reason to text again (something specific, not just 'hey?'), a single follow-up is fine. Three messages in a row with no answer is too many.

How long should the first text be?

One to three sentences. Long opening paragraphs read as nervous. Short and specific reads as confident.

Is it weird to text first?

No. The person who texts first looks interested, not desperate. Most of the time they were hoping you would.
